Mar 28, 2018 The Capture share rules were set to SKIP computer name. Once I changed that, I was able to manually name the PC which is what I want! But it is pulling that from the Capture share rules even though I was launching the Production Share. You can use this process, for example, to add the client machines you want to deploy, specify their computer names and IP. Set up MDT for BitLocker.
I have been working on getting a MDT server up and running, which I have! However, I am now into the 'tweaking' stage of the project, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to manually type in the computer name during deployment at the Windows Deployment Wizard screen, where you select your task sequence, etc.
I want a custom PC Name. A couple good examples would be Accounting01, Accounting02, Management01, Management02; I think you get the picture. I have searched the interweb up and down, high and low, and all the solutions revolve around this.i think. On the deployment share properties, the Rules tab, edit the text and include OSDComputerName=(whatever).
I have tried I can't say how many times on different shares, etc, and I cannot get the option to type in a computer name to pop up during a deployment. Any help is surely appreciated. I am new to MDT but I have a fairly good beginners grasp on it I believe. Just working out the details now. I have that with the exception of my environments specific data; time zone, etc.
It does not ask me by default. Ok, then it's in those skips. I don't know offhand what the screen is called, but you have it set to not skip the Computer name, but it is skipping the screen that asks. Try reducing the skips down to nothing for now, then you can go in and skip the screens you want. Either the left or the top of the box will tell you what screen it's on. My guess is one of these two: SkipUserData=YES SkipLocaleSelection=YES I can't recall, but there's something below the computer name, and I think it's the locale settings.
EDIT: I was wrong, it's domain settings, which you have set to skip. Example I found on Google images real quick.
You both are correct! It does ask the Computer Details by default and it is SkipComputerName=YES/NO. I was able to get it populate, but it brings up another issue. I have a Capture deployment share and a Production deployment share, which I think is fairly typical? Anyways, once I have performed my capture, I then use that.wim file and put it into my production share. However, the wizard on deployment start up appears to use the Rules from both the Capture and Production shares. It is a little tough to explain here, but the reason I wasn't catching it was because I was only looking at my production share rules as that was what I was using.

What am I missing here? I clearly don't have a full understanding of this yet, and i can easily admit that, but that simply doesn't make sense to me as I have two separate; Shares, OS Imports, Task Sequence, WDS Boot Images.
Hi there I am trying to create a TS variable that will set the computer name to the mac address. I have tried the following configurations in my custom TS with MDT workbench. Install: TS Variable = Computer Name or OSDComputername (Tested separately) Value = isDesktop = true then Right(Replace('DT%macaddress%',':','),15) and isLaptop = true then Right(Replace('LT%macaddress%',':','),15) Postinstall: TS Variable = Computer Name or OSDComputername (Tested separately) Value = isDesktop = true then Right(Replace('DT%macaddress%',':','),15) and isLaptop = true then Right(Replace('LT%macaddress%',':','),15) If i add the following to my customsettings.ini file all is fine. SkipComputername = yes osdcomputername=# Right(Replace('DT%macaddress%',':','),15)# any assistance will be highly appreciated. I just noticed that you would like a custom property for the Computer name. Here is a new example.
The bad news is that OSDComputername cannot be overwritten (fist value wins). So that example would not work either. I think you have to edit the ztiConfigure.wsf script to use the custom property if defined. But I'm sure there are better ways.
Settings Priority=ByLaptopType,ByDesktopType, Default Properties=MAC-ComputerName ByLaptopType Subsection=Laptop-%IsLaptop% ByDesktopType Subsection=Desktop-%IsDesktop% Laptop-True MAC-ComputerName=#Right(Replace('LT%macaddress001%',':','),15)# Desktop-True MAC-ComputerName=#Right(Replace('DT%macaddress001%',':','),15)# Laptop-False Desktop-False Default OSInstall=Y. Thanks for the help, i also came across another site that explained your fix above in more detail and also another site that shows you how to test your customsettings.ini before actual deployment. Test customsettings.ini: Explain Customsettings.ini in more detail: During testing for some reason OSDComputerName is set to 'LT-Macaddress' even though isLaptop=False and isDesktop=True. If i change the priority from Priority = ByLaptopType, ByDesktopType, Default TO Priority = ByDestktopType, ByLaptopType, Default then all is fine, not sure if this is because i am testing on VM's and not physical machines.
